What EN 1729 is
EN 1729 is the European standard for chairs and tables used in educational institutions, and it is the closest thing the school furniture world has to a sizing rulebook. It comes in two parts. EN 1729-1:2015 sets the dimensions — seat height, seat depth, backrest height, table height — for each size mark. EN 1729-2:2012+A1:2015 sets the safety requirements and the test methods those sizes must survive.
The part that matters most for kindergartens is the size mark system. EN 1729 defines numbered sizes, each matched to a body size range, and marks them so staff can see at a glance whether a chair belongs in the room it was placed in. A chair sized for an older child forces a younger one’s feet to dangle; a table sized for a taller group makes a preschooler hunch. The standard turns “children’s furniture” into furniture with a measured relationship to the child sitting in it.
Almost no preschool supplier in the wooden furniture segment holds this certificate. Most offer one chair height and one table height and call it a range.
Why kindergarten buyers should care
Posture is the everyday reason. Children spend a large part of their day seated at a table — eating, drawing, doing Montessori practical life work. When seat height and table height do not match the child, the compensation shows up in slouched backs and fidgeting, and teachers work around it with cushions and footrests.
Tender compliance is the commercial reason. School and kindergarten procurement in much of Europe asks for EN 1729 by name. If a supplier cannot produce the certificate, the bid loses points or fails at document screening, whatever the furniture looks like.
Longevity is the budget reason. A size range that covers several age groups means the same table family can move rooms as children grow, instead of being replaced. Buying three height steps of one table design costs less over a decade than buying a new fixed-height set each time the room’s age group shifts.
Our certificate and what it covers
We hold certificate UTT202312512C, with accompanying report UTT202312512S, issued by Shenzhen Universal Test Technology on 2023-12-29. It certifies our table, model EV-TBTR6676, against EN 1729-1:2015 and EN 1729-2:2012+A1:2015. The certificate holder on the document is Mach Power Italy Srl, and the manufacturer behind it is our Dalian production base.
The same 2023 testing round produced the chemical safety set that usually accompanies school furniture purchases:
- RoHS — certificate UTT202312513C, report UTT202312513S
- EN 13986 — certificate UTT202312514C, report UTT202312514S, the harmonized standard for wood-based panels and formaldehyde emission
- REACH — report UTT202312515S
So a buyer who needs ergonomics documentation and chemical documentation for the same shipment can source both from one file instead of chasing two suppliers.
How our product range reflects the standard
Dimension choice is built into the range. Our beech square table (F-T-W-009) is offered at 60 by 60 cm in three height steps — 34, 40 and 50 cm high — which maps onto the preschool age spread in the EN 1729 sizing logic. The beech rectangular table (F-T-W-010, 120 by 60 cm) and the beech circular table (F-T-W-011, 60 cm diameter) are offered on the same three height steps. For older groups, rectangular and round tables at 45 to 55 cm high extend the ladder, and the cube chair (F-S-W-016, 30 by 30 by 30 cm) gives a stable low seat for the youngest rooms.
The construction behind those heights is beech and birch plywood in solid-wood-plus-panel builds, finished with non-toxic paint. Tables are the piece children lean on all day, so we run them through the same EN 71 mechanical testing as the play equipment — report NBHL2205008296TY covers our wooden children’s tables and chairs for children one year and older, with edges, tips and material cleanliness all judged Pass.
Buyer self-check list
When a supplier claims school furniture ergonomics, ask for the following before you believe it:
- The EN 1729 certificate number and the issuing body. Ours is UTT202312512C from Shenzhen Universal Test Technology; a real certificate can be verified with the issuer.
- Which part of the standard is covered — EN 1729-1 dimensions, EN 1729-2 safety and tests, or both. We cover both on the same model.
- The exact model number on the certificate (ours is EV-TBTR6676) and whether it matches the item you are buying.
- The height steps actually available per table family, and whether they cover the age groups in your rooms.
- Whether seat and table heights can be matched as a pair. A size-marked chair next to an unmarked table solves only half the problem.
- The supporting chemical file — EN 13986 for panel emissions, RoHS and REACH — because ergonomics paperwork and emissions paperwork tend to be requested together.
Send us the age groups and room count for your project and we will return a size-by-room proposal with the matching model numbers and certificate references in a few working days.
