“Solid wood or plywood?” is the wrong question on its own. The right question is: which material for which piece, in which room, for how many years of use? Both materials appear in serious preschool furniture — including ours — and both have configurations where they beat the other. This page compares them the way a buyer experiences them: over a decade of cleaning, moving, repairing and re-ordering, not on the day the container opens.
The short answer
| Solid wood | Birch plywood | |
|---|---|---|
| Best at | Chairs, small frames, hand-feel pieces, Waldorf-style natural rooms | Table tops, panels, shelves, towers, large surfaces |
| Weight | Heavier per piece | Lighter at equal panel size |
| Dimensional stability | Moves with humidity | Stays flat — better for large tops and trays |
| Repair | Re-sand, re-finish locally | Edge damage harder to hide |
